Day 129- Abandoned, but Warm

Day 129- Abandoned, but Warm

Friends and Family,

Today consisted of mostly walking. Beans and tortillas for breakfast, before lugging Ja Rule up a super slope. Half way through the day we happened upon a truck stop with clean restrooms. We walked and walked and walked until 4:15 when we stumbled on a suprise gas station.

As we came over the crest of a hill we saw a Phillips 66 sign, and immediatly assumed it was no longer open. Some older signs had mentioned the station, but they were in such poor condition that we completely disregarded them. As we approached Kira noticed that the gas prices were lit up. I still wasn't convinced. Two cars in the lot, one of them was an older pickup that was blocking the front french doors. I walked up to shake the handles and noticed two people inside. I assumed that they were just keeping warm inside, but questioned why the station had some merchandise on the shelves. Around to the other side of the building, we saw an open sign and a second entry. This one was open and inside we found one shelf and a couple of racks of salty snacks. I bought a pickle and Shikira got a snickers. Two powerades and we headed outside to snack.

Across the interstate I noticed a station that was certainly abandoned. I told Kira that we would camp behind it and we headed over. I shook the handles to make sure that it wasn't open, then we headed around back to set up. Score, the back door was open. Double score, the place was clean inside. There was no graffiti on the walls and the floors were in good shape with no animal poop. Suprisingly Kira was on board with sleeping inside and so we layed out our mats and bags. It was much warmer inside and we were all smiles the rest of the evening. A truck pulled in out front and Kira was happy that a big rig driver would be watching over the outside of our building all night.

To a warm place to lay our head,

Levi
