Day 141- Record Mileage

Day 141- Record Mileage

Hello,

It is probably no surprise that the morning was cold yet again. Levi was hoping some of the coals from the fire the night before would still be going so we could get a morning fire, but it was dead. We made some oatmeal WITH the instant coffee, but it is much better with regular old water. I wanted to get walking by eight, and we were packed up by then, but Levi wanted to make a quick video first. We started walking by 8:15.

Along our morning walk we met Nora who is from Santa Fe but was visiting her brother out at his ranch for the weekend. It was nice to chat with someone, because it had been a while. There must have been something about that coffee/oatmeal mix that really got us going, however, because I pushed six miles no problem and Levi did another six before we stopped for lunch at the beginning of Highway 36. We decided to go for our last bag of beans for burritos and had them for lunch day three in a row-so tasty!

Back on the road by one, we were pushing to make some good miles for the day. I pushed another six miles of easy downhill, but Levi got stuck with the up and down section again. Luckily he has a little more muscle to help him out. Before we knew it we had made 24 miles for the day! Levi suggested walking farther since there was a nearly full moon. I agreed and on we went as the sun went down. We saw a truck ahead turn around, and they came to ask if we needed a ride. There were several guys in the truck, but as always we said no thanks. We felt bad when they were turning around again to go back in the direction they were headed and their truck broke down. We were going to offer help, but realized there was nothing we could do for them. Instead we were more eager to get farther away in the small chance they would hassle us for the inconvenience. So, there we were walking in the dark trying to look for a camp spot. I realized quickly again how much I don't like walking in the dark nor finding camp in the dark. Finally, we settled on a spot that was somewhat flat and barely hidden near a small metal tunnel. It was cold and we bundled up, but we were very happy when we realized we had walked 28 miles that day. I believe that set our record for highest mileage day!

Fast Paced,

Shikira
