Day 142- Animal Thief

Day 142- Animal Thief

Howdy,

Levi and I woke up early this morning. Since we were motivated by a meal in Quemado, we were up and going around 7:30. Levi had mentioned hearing things in the tunnel when we set up, and also near the tent. Well-it turned out that the little bugger was out to get us! First, I asked Levi to hand me my shoes from right outside the tent. There was only one out there, because that rascal had dragged the other one all the way to the outside of the tunnel. Thank goodness he didn't take it or my feet would have been freezing in my Chacos. It didn't stop there either. We were putting the tent away and realized he had chewed through the corner strap of our tent that connects to our pole. Luckily, we were connected to the footprint underneath so the tent was still holding up. We packed the duffles on JaRule and went to bungee him up, but half the bungee was gone! Goodness we were robbed in the night by the animal thief!

Finally we got going and walked the five and a half miles into the tiny town of Quemado. We ate at the Largo Cafe and enjoyed a delicious breakfast of Huevos Rancheros, French Toast, and Coffee. They had WiFi, so we stayed a while and played on the phones. We left around 10:30 and went across the street to the country store to pick up a few things. It was one of the best country stores we had come across. We picked up some cookies, M&7M's, snackpacks, a sharpie, and some  needle and thread. Outside, as we packed our purchases all into JaRule, we met Mike and chatted with him for a while. He had lived in LA as a movie producer/actor, but he made his way out here and was enjoying the country life.

By 11 we were on highway 60 and walked up the hill out of town. The road was far less busy than I expected which made our walk pleasant. It came time to find camp and there was a low spot on the side of the road with an easily opened gate into a pasture. Levi sewed the strap back together nicely, and we set up our tent behind some trees. We then went over our budget and made a plan to get back on track. It was nice, because it kept us up a little longer and there was not the same chill in the air as usual. It came time for bed and I fell asleep very quickly.

Following Highway 60 to Phoenix,
