Day 154- Dreaded Tunnel

Day 154- Dreaded Tunnel

Hi,
Today was the day we had to make it through the dreaded tunnel. Since we had driven through it a few days prior with Tab and Charlene we knew what to expect. It wasn't terribly long, just very dark. The three or so miles leading up to the tunnel had minimal shoulder and was quite windy. So, I decided to be a flagger. We had found one of the orange construction flags the say prior, so I was in front of Levi and jarule and flagged the cars into the passing lane. It worked surprisingly well too. We made it to the tunnel and put our headlamps on. There was a narrow sidewalk that was not big enough to push jarule down, but enough to escape onto if any car didn't see us. It was a bit of a stressful morning, but once we made it safely out of the tunnel our walk was a piece of cake!
We walked across a bridge littered with pennies and down the hill into superior. The Mexican restaurant had several cars in front so we stopped in for lunch. I would say it was some of the best on the trip too. Yum yum! After superior we walked by a desert arboretum national park. We were interested, but didn't want to pay the nine dollar entrance fee. The rest of the day was nice downhill with beautiful views into the phoenix valley. There were tons of seguaro cacti and we were on the hunt for a classic two armed one. Nightfall came upon us and we found some BLM land that allowed camping. We walked in and I set up the tent while Levi made a fire. It is always a treat to have a fire and a spot we know we won't get in trouble for camping at. Before bed we had some soup for dinner and I read aloud from The Bean Trees.
Down in elevation,
Shikira
