Day 164- Not Yet California

Day 164- Not Yet California

Hola,

It wasn't yet light out, but there was a shed door behind our tent in the next lot that made an obnoxiously loud creaking noise which woke us up. There was no use in trying to fall back asleep. Levi was very kind and offered to go out into the cold to do the laundry while I hung out in the tent. We were given one of the free newspapers from the reporters the day before, and I sat and thumbed through it before resting for a bit longer under both Levi's and my sleeping bags. When he returned an hour later we started packing up our stuff. I went to brush my teeth and fill our waters and I met Jasmine and her son who were very kind and interested in our trip. By the time I had cleaned the water bladders and filled them Levi met me at the sink and we headed out.

Just a couple of blocks ahead was Qtown Cafe which served up a delicious breakfast and several cups of coffee. We hung out and charged up our phones fully and added a couple days to the website. We were only 20 miles from California, and I thought for sure we would make it there at a leisurely pace. We stopped once more in Quartzsite at Daniel's Jerkey before heading  out. Well, we were in for a surprise in terrain that day! Since we had walked our only thirty mile day before, we were still kind of tired. Shortly after getting out of town we found ourselves on a 4x4 drive area up and down, up and down very steep hills. It was also incredibly rocky. I had no idea how tough the day would be. We ended up finding the best way to get JaRule up the hills was for Levi to run down and catch as much momentum up the next hill as he could, while I ran behind him and pushed Levi. It was quite exhausting, especially since we had to do it over 20 times, but from it I realized how much stronger I have become on this trip. We kept thinking the worst was over, but the hills kept coming. In the end, I was motivated by a Wendy's that was ahead at the Flying J. When we finally arrived I enjoyed a tasty dinner and a Cinnabon for dessert. I was a little sad we didn't make it to California like I thought, but I was more embarrassed I had text the twitter website and misled people that we would make it (I had already confused people with the license plate picture back in New Mexico!) We stayed a while in the warmth of Wendys and then decided to set up our tent nearby so we could return for coffee in the morning.

Survived one of the most challenging days,
